A full calendar of events, friendly staff, amiable neighbors. Stay as long as you like.

Great indoor and outdoor seating, a distinctive décor and feeling. No board games, but a stocked magazine rack.

                             Coffee: 2
A bitter cup with a skewed milk to espresso ratio. The barista took obvious
care with his preparation, but taste was lacking.

                      Community: 1
The café does not host events. Without other patrons in the shop, it was difficult
to gauge what community might exist. The barista was kind, but unengaged.

                               Place: 3

Colorful walls and paintings set a fun tone, but no music was playing, dust lingered on surfaces, and the bathrooms were sort of scary.

                             Coffee: 10
An insistent, smooth taste that often leads to second cups, jitters be damned.
Perfect ratio of milk to espresso, great temperature, beautiful presentation.

                      Community: 10

Whether you come in to do work chat with your friends or read the paper, Big Bear is an open arms kind of place. The baristas are friendly and knowledgeable, but don’t forget to pick up your order. That’s just rude.

                                 Place: 9

Music, its own garden, indoor and outdoor seating, and twinkly-eyed sense of
humor make for a great place to hang out.

Hours: Mon-Sat. 7am-9pm
Beans: Counter Culture Beans
Wifi: Yes
Snacks: Pastries
                              Coffee: 9
A visually enticing cup. Perfectly achieved ratio of milk to espresso, hot, robust
and smooth to the dregs. An occasional touch of bitter at the start, but nothing
you won’t get past with eagerness
.

                       Community: 8

Though Peregrine does not hold events, its porch and interior feel like a daily
meet-and-greet. Neighbors chat, dogs mingle, and adjacent tables swap
sections of the paper.

                                Place: 7
Bright décor, reliably good music, outdoor seating, and a feeling you could stay
forever were it not for the line pushing for your seat. Seating hard to manipulate.

                                    Coffee: 4
Correct ratio of milk to coffee, but little to no foam, and a thin flavor.

                             Community: 6

SoHo holds a variety of events and there seems to be a circle of regulars. The
baristas were pleasant, though your neighbors may all be wearing headphones.

                                Place: 6

Unique paintings and cute table lamps provide a cozy feeling, though they rely a little heavily on run-of-the-mill coffee
kitsch.

A little sharp, the flavor of the coffee needed milk to neutralize its texture. Too
much mocha syrup put its sipper out of commission.

                        Community: 5
The customer service could not be better, and the shop’s patrons are easygoing
and happy to chat. Ample, well-lit indoor and outdoor seating, go ahead and kick
your shoes off.

                                 Place: 5
Uniform tables and chairs don’t invite lounging, but the warm walls and tile put
your working brain at ease. No music.

Knowledgeable, friendly baristas set the tone for a shop where people of all ages hang out. An equal number of computers to novel-readers.

No music played to take the edge off the intensity of the shop’s experience.
Indoor seating you can’t manipulate, but stay as long as you like.

                              Coffee: 9
Smooth, rich coffee served in a for-here cup and accompanied by an animal cracker. Sometime messy presentation does not detract from the flavor. Be prepared: It’s hard to make conversation while coffee remains in your mug.

                       Community: 8
The kind of diversity you would expect of our nation’s capital: A mélange of
languages mingles with the ever-present live jazz to make for a perfect noise cloud.
Not a place that feels like “Cheers,” but stick around long enough and you might just become one of the gang.

                               Place: 10
Not your typical coffeehouse experience: A bar, a restaurant, and a go-to locale for
project collaborators, it would be possible to visit Tryst and never get the depressed
poet vibe. (Except for the thick scent of creativity the place asserts). Stay forever,
put your feet up.

Beans: Lexington Coffee

                              Coffee: 5
Well-achieved milk to coffee ratio, average milk quality, and average flavor make for a solid, mid-range cup. Super-hot liquid and lacks spark.

                       Community: 3

The baristas did their job, but a table-time limit and an earlier closing than stated left us grumpy. Few patrons, but an amiable atmosphere.
                               Place: 6
Quirky, blue sky ceilings, plenty of tables, and that clutch patio make for a good
place rating.

A beautiful cup, velvety milk, and perfect espresso to milk ratio. A little sharp on
the tongue, the flavor resolves to a smooth, round finish.

                       Community: 6

Knowledgeable, skilled baristas who will answer questions, but can be
a little snarky. The patrons tend to be computer users, but offer smiles.

                                Place: 6

A chic space with seating limited by the building’s shape. But for that restriction, CCC has great seating, good music, and a place you could set up shop. Though the chairs might get uncomfortable.

The cup lacked artfulness and the foam didn’t quite hang together, but on the whole,  a James Bond coffee: Smooth and sophisticated.

                                         Community: 8
Offering an open mic and music acts, Sova is a good nighttime hub. A quiet shop and cordial employees make for a laidback experience. Stay as long as you like unscrutinized, and don’t mind if the neighbors aren’t chatty.

                                    Place: 10

A getaway right in your own backyard, Sova swaddles the coffee patron in warm colors, great lighting, and amenities of all sorts. Magazines, children’s books, a place for local artists to exhibit their work, it doesn’t get much better than this.

Your average cup of coffee, both mocha and latte were without foam, and the
milk was thin. The coffee did not taste burnt or bitter.

                        Community: 2
A busy dance card, but for the applicable part of our experience, the baristas
talked only amongst themselves, and closed up early.

                                  Place: 6
A comfortable space with great outdoor seating and chairs you can move around
to seat your meeting or study session. Inoffensive music.
